About the Artists
Christopher Brown is an acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader, and educator who seeks to be a voice within the advocacy of Jazz music and American culture. And through the expansive range of groups that he has assembled and/or performed with—which span from duos to Jazz big bands to military marching bands and orchestras—his musical and personal experiences have led him towards an interest in synthesizing the principles of Jazz with the day-to-day practicalities of life and leadership. The Christopher Brown Quartet is one of the few groups in the Pacific NW to truly embody the daring spirit of NYC Jazz between the early 1980’s and the early 2000’s. They will bring that creative spirit to the table of McMinnville’s HiFi for a memorable evening of live Jazz.A native of Portland, Christopher’s experiences include 20 years of service between the US Marines and Army National Guard, two Jazz Studies degrees from Rutgers University, a four-year appointment as a professor of Jazz history and theory at Rutgers, several international tours with Grammy award winning artists such as Roy Hargrove, Artist in Residence appointments at Jazz workshops around the country and abroad, music videos with artists such as Beyonce and Portland Trail Blazer Damian Lillard, as well as brief stints with acting and modeling between print and tv commercials for companies like Mastercard to extra work on big budget movies with actors such as Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, and Richard Dreyfuss. Christopher currently serves as the professor of Jazz drums at Portland State University and as the Jazz director for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS). Other activities include the communications lead for Habitat for Humanity’s Ambassador Council (Portland Metro/East Region), and the artistic coordinator for TASTE: United for Equity
